MASTERCHEF MIDLANDS SCHOOLS
MASTERCHEF HOSTED BY JACKIE CAMERON SCHOOL OF FOOD AND WINE
“On Friday 29 July, 16 of our pupils took part in a “MasterChef” competition hosted by the Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine. 114 Pupils took part from nearby schools including Hilton College, Michaelhouse, St Mary’s Kloof, The Wykeham Collegiate and St Anne’s. It was a wonderful experience for the girls as they got to experience the pressure of a true industrial kitchen and work in a high pressured scenario. The pupils were given a list of ingredients to choose from and a few days to prepare for the event. They had to produce a main and dessert for 10 covers in the space of an hour.
Our Polly’s Angels Team, led by Mikha Sabatta, included Tyla England, Emily Guimaraens, Holly Jerome, Lauren Skinner, Lilly Steiner and our two assistants, Amahle Nkosi and Chloe Papageorgiou. They won ‘Overall Dish’ based on taste, presentation, originality, hygiene and organisation. Their winning meal was a take on end-of-the-month Roast Chicken. They made Seasoned Roast Chicken Breasts topped with potato and carrot lattice and micro herbs and served it with Mashed Potatoes. The dessert was a deconstructed lemon meringue pie consisting of Swiss meringue, sponge cake, biscuit crumble, lemon curd and lemon curd mousse.
Our second team, The Banyana Banyanas, included Rachel Butcher, Georgia Frost, Isabella Gaul, Stephanie Langebrink, Julia Mantle, Kwanele Sokhela, Isabella Thornton-Dibb, Rebecca van Duren and Caitlin Watson. They placed second overall with their dish of Chicken Fried Rice with a Peanut Butter and Soya Sauce and Orange flavoured Chocolate Mousse and Brandy Snaps.
Thank you Jackie for being so inspirational and for making your passion for food so available to all of us. I so enjoy the wine tasting evenings and am gobsmacked at the students' growth – you really feel as if you get to know each and everyone of them. The MasterChef competition was simply amazing and was so good for the girls and all the pupils to experience. Thank you for everything you do!” - Mrs Janine Pollard, Head of Consumer Studies at St Anne's Diocesan School
