If you have ever treated yourself to a La Petite France cheese experience you’ll know why Preston Farm is on Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine’s list of favourite suppliers.

It is few kilometres from Howick and, in the rolling hills of the Karkloof, La Petite France handmade cheese is crafted. Owned and run by Grant Warren, this working farm produces the delectable Camembert and Brie cheeses that South Africans have come to love.

Jersey and Swedish Red cattle dot the green pastures surrounding the dairy and the factory; and Grant treads lightly on the environment by harvesting rainwater, turning cow manure into compost for the vegetables and growing all the grass the cows require. He uses fresh warm milk straight from milking to make the cheese, thereby saving energy by not having to reheat the milk after cooling. La Petite France cheeses can be described as ‘artisan’ because the process used is delicate, gentle and hands on.

The cheese range also includes a Hilton Blue, Tilsiter Cheddar and three delicious variants of feta – plain, sun-dried tomato and black pepper.

If you enjoy good wholesome food and a tranquil setting, ensure your next visit to the Karkloof includes a stop at Preston Farm. Farm Shop is open Mondays to Fridays from 09h00 to 16h00 and on Saturdays from 09h00 to 15h00.  Cheese Café is open Wednesdays to Fridays from 09h00 to 16h00 and on Saturdays from 09h00 to 15h00.
