L'Ormarins Wine Farm

L'Ormarins Wines

After the death of his brother in 2001; Johann Rupert took over the reins of L’Ormarins in 2003. He proceeded with a complete overhaul initiated by his brother; this included the construction of an entirely new winemaking facility. From its home base on historic L’Ormarins wine farm beneath the jagged peaks of the Groot Drakenstein mountain in Franschhoek, Anthonij Rupert Wines has cast its net wide, across the length and breadth of the Cape winelands, in search of what it takes to make the finest wines this corner of the winemaking world has to offer.

The state-of-the-art winery gleams inside with stainless steel and new French oak. The top floor rotates over the lower floor - like the gears in a watch - so that various small-lot fermentations can flow by gravity into the aging vessels below.

At the heart of Anthonij Rupert Wines lies the fundamental belief that the source of supreme wine quality lies in the land; that a specific terroir, with soil and climate working together to capture the essence of each particular grape variety, dictates the style of wine that speaks powerfully of the highest quality and most genuine character. In the cellars, the fruit from the vines are treated with the highest level of care through the winemaking process to create a wine that is true to the natural characteristics of the grapes from the vines.

From the John Platter Guide 2010 – Decanter: “A must-have”

“In 2005, when proprietor Johann Rupert shared his vision for the new Anthonij Rupert wines with his team, he essentially turned its members into crusaders. However, instead of chalices, their quest was for old vines, ‘extreme’ sites within bio-diverse environments, and environmentally friendly farming principles; their holy grail: terroir and soil-specific wines.” “…produce wines with a strong sense of place. The quest, however, will be unending.”
